Queen Latifah

Dana Elaine Owens is an American artist and rapper, best recognized under the stage name, Queen Latifah. Queen Latifah's work in music film and television has resulted in her receiving the Golden Globe award two Screen Actors Guild Awards two Image Awards a Grammy Award six additional Grammy nominations, an Emmy Award nomination and an Academy Award nomination. Queen Latifah was born in and lived in Newark New Jersey the daughter of Rita teacher who taught for Irvington High School and Lancelot Owens Sr. as a police officer. The couple divorced when Latifah was age of ten. Latifah attended a Catholic school, and she was educated in Newark New Jersey. She attended at the Baptist church. Latifah refers to an Arabic word that means "delicate and compassionate". Her cousin bestowed it on her when she was eight. Latifah was a 5'10" tall power forward on the high school team, was always tall. She performed the song "Home" from The Wiz in a performance at her highschool. Latifah became a beatboxer for her band, the Ladies Fresh rap band. Latifah joined the Flavor Unit's original group, made up of a number of MCs and producer DJ Mark 45 King. Mark James aka DJ Mark the 45 King recorded an audition recording of Queen Latifah's rap Princess of the Posse. The song was recorded and given to Yo! MTV Raps Freddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music was a member of Latifah at the time and was awed by the song. In 1988, she dropped Wrath of My Madness as the first single by Latifah.
